Are you ADHD and is there a natural way to treat it?

I guess you might want to take this short test first, ADHD test, before deciding  if you have attention deficit–hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) .  Although this may be for a loved one or maybe boarder line loved one as they work your last nerve with the end of a lit cigarette.

Here is some “good” news I had just gleamed from this recent abstract in Pediatrics. 2009; 1245(1): 71-8 (ISSN: 1098-4275 :

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the effect of stimulant treatment in youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) on the subsequent development of comorbid psychiatric disorders. We tested the association between stimulant treatment and the subsequent development of psychiatric comorbidity in a longitudinal sample of patients with ADHD. METHODS: We conducted a case-control, 10-year prospective follow-up study into young-adult years of youth with ADHD. At baseline, we assessed consecutively referred white male children with (n = 140) and without (n = 120) ADHD, aged 6 to 18 years. At the 10-year follow-up, 112 (80%) and 105 (88%) of the children in the ADHD and control groups, respectively, were reassessed (mean age: 22 years). We examined the association between stimulant treatment in childhood and adolescence and subsequent comorbid disorders and grade retention by using proportional hazards survival models. RESULTS: Of the 112 participants with ADHD, 82 (73%) were previously treated with stimulants. Participants with ADHD who were treated with stimulants were significantly less likely to subsequently develop depressive and anxiety disorders and disruptive behavior and less likely to repeat a grade compared with participants with ADHD who were not treated. CONCLUSIONS: We found evidence that stimulant treatment decreases the risk for subsequent comorbid psychiatric disorders and academic failure in youth with ADHD. Full article

Well now we know that we can trust the pharmaceuticals we are taking or feeding our kids. Ya right!

I will writing on possible causes and natural suggestions in future postings.

Experts Gear up for Pandemic of Vaccine Worry

Washington (Reuters) Sept. 16, 2009

Memories linger of the 1976 swine flu debacle, when 43 million Americans were vaccinated against a virus that never spread, and newspapers filled with reports of Guillain-Barre syndrome.

"We have anticipated that there will be a need for enhanced surveillance for Guillain-Barre as well as other adverse events," Dr Nancy Cox of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told the meeting. But because H1N1 is new, vaccine makers have been testing it to learn what the right dose is.

To address this, CDC and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are gearing up for one of the biggest surveillance efforts ever. "We know how absolutely essential clear, transparent communications are to the public in order to have a successful vaccination campaign," Cox said.

Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is a type of demyelinating neuropathy. [1] [2] It is a clinically defined syndrome characterized by motor difficulty, absence of deep tendon reflexes (with preservation of cutaneous reflexes), paresthesias without objective sensory loss, pain on deep palpation of large muscles, minor modification in electrical reactions of nerve and muscle, and increased CSF albumin with absence of cellular reaction (albuminocytologic dissociation). [1] [3] Acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP) is a multifocal inflammatory process involving the peripheral nervous system. [4]

I think I will keep out of sight and keep to the new silver product from American Biotech Labs (ABL). I will be making this available soon.  Below is an email from an ABL rep. that pretty much sums it up.

Mark,
Thank you for the email.  American Biotech Labs holds the patent to a technology called SilverSol Technology®.  Some companies claim Silver Sol Technology, which is not trademarked (the difference is only a space in the wording, but evidentially it is very important).  While ABL maintains many private label contracts with some of these Silver Sol technology companies, there are quite a few and I don't necessarily keep up on all of them.  Regardless, I am not sure if they would want us telling others that we make their product even if I did know for certain.  If it looks like it may be a private label company, it just may be.

Mandatory Vaccinations

Mandatory vaccination laws include Alabama, Arkansas, California, and Kentucky. However, in these states, the laws include exemptions through which healthcare workers can abstain from vaccination due to religious or medical reasons (eg, Alabama and Kentucky); in California, healthcare workers can decline for any reason if the refusal is made in writing. The New York requirement is, to date, the most stringent among the states.

The American Medical Association does not support mandatory vaccinations, but "we strongly encourage all healthcare professionals to protect their patients, their families, and themselves from the harmful effects of the flu by getting vaccinated," Rebecca J. Patchin, MD, a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association, told Medscape Infectious Diseases.

Elephant in the Room for Healthcare Policy

A recent New York Times opinions article says so much of what we are facing as citizens in health care these days. I hope you will take the time to read it.

Michael Pollan,  is a contributing writer for The Times Magazine and a professor of journalism at the University of California, Berkeley, is the author of “In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto.”

Pollan was interviewed by Guy Raz on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered show last night and answered questions about what he wrote. You can both read or listen to that interview at:
